it's not, it's an oni---a traditional japanese ogre. if you saw it in an anime or whatever, then it was based on that and not the other way around. and if that ad wasn't creepy, then i don't know what is.
If I were to attempt to analyze this commercial, I think it's as simple as a commercial of a woman playing with a baby and a tissue box, but instead of using a normal child they used a very notable Japanese icon, the baby child of the aka oni (red demon, as many people noted).
I personally find artistic creativity in this commercial but I can also see how it's FTW for most people. The oni in the first clip does in deed look like an oompa loompa with a horn LOL.
It probably has some hidden meaning that we don't get. And it looks like the movie is played backwards... Sooo, when you play it the right way it's something like:
"Buy these f-ing tissues or this red-demon-oni kid right here will come and eat you."
Barcode Brothers ftw.
ReplyDeleteYes...yes...this compels me to want to buy tissues somehow...
ReplyDeleteSo a mini horned Oompa Loompa was brought into the ad campaign for Kleenex how?
ReplyDeletethe mini "oompla loompa" seems to be a character "borrowed" from Urusei Yatsura manga. I cannot figure out how it is related though.

ReplyDelete"Island song" by Björk anyone?
ReplyDeletethe song is from a band called Opus 3 - a 90's hit.
ReplyDeleteActually, the original song was released in the early 80s as a straight up a cappella by English folk duo Jane And Barton.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, the kid is supposed to be an akaoni no ko (something like "red demon child') taken from Japanese folklore.
I linked to this on my blog Showa OK! Thanks for posting!

ReplyDeletethis song backwards is sampled in "halcyon and on", the mortal kombat soundtrack

The people in this commercial supposedly died shortly after filming.
