It could be understood as a reference to the Greek idea of deus ex machina as represented in their mythology. The idea of the person running down the middle, taking the masses by surprise and causing them to fall back could represent an Oedipus character, an unforeseen underdog rising up over the people on the shoulders of an unforeseeable destiny.
As the matter of fact the person running down the middle represents the deus ex machina. An external element brought up to a situation without an internal logic.
I see no Oedipus character but maybe yourself, trying to drawn some repressed feelings result of our cultures decadence.
