Ganguro Girls

Ganguro is a fashion trend in Japan where teenage girls try to emulate the tan bimbos of America. It started with a little bronzer but escalated into full black face and pink 80s hair. Extreme Ganguro girls are called Yamanba, which roughly translates to mountain hag. This isn't a derogatory term, these girls are actually trying to go for the mountain hag look.
...and I thought hipsters were bad.

  20. The Ganguro street fashion was popular among Japanese girls in the early 2000s. The Ganguro style consists of bleached hair, a dark tan, fake eyelashes, black and white eyeliner and platform shoes. A typical look for a Ganguro Girl is to wear brightly coloured outfits, mini-skirts, and tie-dyed sarongs.

  21. No one does this anymore. This look died out in the early 2000's. Old news.

  22. to the fourth post above me...I understand their want to break away from culture...but does that mean they have to look like evil clowns from space?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think a possible purpose of the ganguro style is to repel gropers.

  24. Any porn like this...?

  25. It's honestly not any different from Goths. Just a different selection of colors.

  26. some 'fashion' created by top designers around the world are just as weird, so why do people mind this style so much? now isnt highschool anymore where stupid immature kids ostracize other people for being different, yet many adults still have the same thinking as they had when they were in highschool - that weird is bad. if you dont like them then just don't mind them.

  27. The reason people in Japan dress like this is actually to counter the mainstream "beauty", they are doing it to empower all the others that don't fit into that category.
They aren't whores or hipsters - it's just a unique fashion.

  28. hmm I've actually seen this style done in a cute way, my niece is african american and does something similar. of course, her skin is a natural honey/brown color and she uses white eye shadow and then goes and does that winged black eyeliner thing over it. The best way I could describe it is that she does the ganguro style in a tidy way, and when she's done she looks like a cute little reverse panda with pink hair ^^

  29. beauty is the eye of the beholder. If they like it then that's their choice.

    but its not my thing

  32. So how is this any worse that wearing a spiked green mohawk or pale makeup with black circles around the eyes? Every country has its fashion rebellion. Let Japan have theirs.

  40. Where? I lived in Japan from 2005 and 2007 and didn't see any ganguros. I had a girl tell me that she used to dress in yamamba style but no one does that any more.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Looks like Jersey Shore

    ReplyDelete
  42. Lol. If this is what they call "individuality," Then why is there a humongous group of the population doing it? No trend (hipster, goth, ganguro, preppy etc.) is individualality. That's purely paradoxical.

However, I'm not against it. They can do what they want. It's their life and if that's how they feel comfortable, awesome. Just don't expect me to like it or understand it. Kinda like how some people feel about rap music.

  43. I thought it's kinda unique in it's own way, I'd love to try out the look for a day for fun XD It is a very dramatic look since I'm more into the whole ''natural concept of make up'' Since I wanna try it out this summer and blog about it I'm just on my way in doing some research!! ♥ Thanks for the post ♥

  44. Yes, dark skin, tans, and different hair colors can be beautiful. But THIS, this is taking it too far. It's hideous.

    ReplyDelete
  45. HEY I AM AN OLD LADY 54 AND I KIND OF LIKE IT THE BRIGHT COLORS AND THE BRIGHT BANGLES NOT LIKING THE BLACK FACES WITH WHITE BUT TAN FACES I CAN SEE

    ReplyDelete
  46. I was there for about a month, I saw one or two in Shibuya but that was it. It's not too popular anymore, but interesting none-the-less (No more dramatic than our extreme gothic peeps)

  47. Hi! Im here to inform most of you here (In a very polite way) That this fashion is not supposed to be "Whoreish" It was used to rebel against Japanese beauty standards that made many feel ashamed for thinking otherwise, The beauty standards there are Pale skin dark hair and conservative clothing. These girls and people were not at all trying to emulate the American girl's style at all, They are just trying to show people in their country that what they consider beauty doesn't have to be the ONLY beauty ^^ Now please I do hope most of you will understand and be less tolerant about this.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Just wanna mention that this style actually died out already. No one in Japan actually dresses like this anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  49. So true! I just looked up what ganguro was yesterday! they are proving that pale skin and dark hair isn't the only thing that's beautiful but dark skin and white hair/pink hair can be attractive too! I actually think the dark skin looks gorgeous on them! <(^.^)>
